The Food and Drug Administration has approved a prescription drug for a new treatment for low libido, but it's not clear what that treatment will do. The FDA has already rejected three other drugs that have been linked to erectile dysfunction, such as Viagra and Cialis.
FDA's panel voted 18-6 to approve the first drug approved to treat low libido, Cialis, the first drug to be approved for sexual dysfunction, or to be approved by the Food and Drug Administration for the treatment of erectile dysfunction, as it's approved for women.
The panel also voted to approve a second drug, and the drug is now being tested for effectiveness, according to the FDA.
"There is a need for a treatment that is more effective than the existing treatment in that it's safe for women to use," Dr. Steven Nissen, director of the Center for Sexual Medicine and Addictions at the Cleveland Clinic told The Associated Press.
Nissen said he was not aware of any studies that could prove the drug would work for women to enhance sexual desire and arousal.
"I think a lot of women are struggling with [sexual dysfunction] and that's one of the major factors for [female sexual dysfunction]. [It] is a common issue and not one that we can treat, certainly not for women," he said.
The FDA has been working with the National Institutes of Health on the drug for more than a decade and the panel has given its approval for the treatment of low libido in women. Nissen said the FDA approved the drug because it is considered safe and effective for women to use.
The agency hasn't yet approved the drug for the treatment of hypoactive sexual desire disorder, or HSDD. Nissen said the FDA hasn't approved the drug to treat low libido.
But a new study by the National Institutes of Health found that women taking the drug for about half the time and those who were not taking the drug for four to six months had low sexual desire and arousal.
In the study, women who took the drug for a year had lower rates of satisfying sexual experiences and more sexual satisfaction in the past year, according to the FDA. In the new study, the number of satisfying sexual experiences, number of satisfying sexual encounters, and the number of satisfying sexual experiences per satisfying encounter was also lower.
